Well-being for your team, benefits for everyone.

Bringing corporate wellbeing in the workplace is trendy, but what exactly are you getting out of it? Will your employees benefit from what you want to share with them? For instance, will this corporate yoga session relax your whole team and let them apprehend any future situation with calm and ease? For some, yes. For others, the learning will be elsewhere.

From what we could observe from the REAL LIFE YOGA corporate sessions and workshops we hold at companies, each employee is different and therefore has different needs to be addressed and met through the methods we share. In most lunchtime sessions for instance (unless the session is tailored to specific methods in agreement with the company), we will guide the participants through a selection of breathing techniques, useful stretches to be done at the desk with normal clothes and additional moves to strengthen or release physical stress from specific body parts. Hence, in a session demonstrating a given set of exercises, everyone will take its own key learning. One person will be surprised to realise that she could calm down much more than she ever thought by using her breath. Another will feel his tension in the upper back lessen as he moves and stretches for some minutes. You will find more examples of benefits and direct feedbacks from our clients here.

This diversity of instant benefits is the reality of all workplaces today and of more broadly of our own singularity. Accordingly, companies can be sure that their employees will set their natural focus on what they need the most on that day. This makes wellbeing at work, a valuable and highly versatile element to bring to your team, as it will bring its results in the exactly the right form to each person.

Why showers are not needed in your office.

While presenting the REAL LIFE YOGA sessions for a Leadership workshop, I was explaining how easily our office-yoga sessions could be included right before the start of a full-day program. Yet, the point that stroke me again as a key benefit for my prospect was not the one I expected: it was the “no-need-for-shower”!

I keep repeating this over and over again: "with our yoga methods adapted to the workplace and to any meeting or conference settings, there is no need to roll out yoga mats, no need to change clothes, not even to take a shower afterwards”. And this is, I believe, a pillar of corporate yoga as most of the time still, companies and event venues do not provide the infrastructure for physical workouts. And even if well-being measures at work are rightly so increasing, it is not necessary nor possible for every company to turn their workspace into a gym. So yes, it is logical to adapt the exercises to these places. And even more so, it is necessary to provide companies with services that respect their teams’ busy agenda. With services that make it, not only possible but, easier for them to experience the benefits of their session. Without adding more stress for taking time off lunch break or adding another rush between the meetings, the phone calls and the yoga session.

If well-being measures at work are increasing, it is not possible for every company to turn their workspace into a gym.

If we are here to help business professionals manage their stress better, remove mental clutter and be in control of their emotions and their time, we shall do this from the start. From the very way we conceive and provide this service in their professional environment: truly integrated in real life and literally “off the mat”.

The art of resilience. Why you need more of it in your business life.

Last week, I attended the Startup Grind event held in Zurich and just like in the last editions, we got the audience relaxed and ready for the fireside chat with a REAL LIFE YOGA session. What keeps me coming back to each event is this wonderful capacity for resilience and optimism I can feel and recognise in each and every guest who has been interviewed. Resilience is a quality worth sharing and experiencing, whether you are in the entrepreneurial or corporate world. So if you haven’t already, make sure you join us for the next Startup Grind to experience what resilience is all about.

Resilience helps you to sustain a doer's mindset.

I am consciously not naming it “entrepreneurial” mindset, because this capacity to take action, over an over again without doubting that everything you undertake is worth trying, is a trait that should be fostered in the corporate world. Whatever ecosystem you work in, you’ll achieve much more if you let yourself the chance to try and learn at ever single step.

It reminds you of how serious or not you ought to take things.

You do not have to be a zen master, nor an advance meditation practitioner or yogi to detach yourself from the outcome of projects and business ideas. Just remind yourself that each task in your daily business life is worth being conducted with care and attention. Give it a chance and the best you can. This is realistically speaking all you can do and influence, the rest is out of your reach, so why blaming or stressing yourself and others?

It helps you take responsibility.

Knowing what is your role and scope of action, what are the elements you can act upon and what you can make out of them - all of this falls into your responsibility. Knowing this, you can take full ownership of your decisions. Something didn’t work out although you gave your best? Well, you have learnt and can do better next time, or try it a bit differently. End of the story. Resilience is powerful tool for a sustainable business life and will keep you in the right place. One of a responsible and creative doer, enthusiastic learner and resourceful human being.

Stress management & productivity at your desk: on awareness (part 3).

All we need to start living a more sustainable and empowered business life is to breathe and to move consciously, and this can only happen if you are aware of it. To wrap up our series of articles following our interview on CNNMoney Switzerland last week, we will show you how and why awareness is the base of everything, from wellbeing to productivity including stress management.

It all starts with awareness.

Whether you are using your breath or learning to move consciously at your desk, everything starts with awareness. This means being aware of your body, of your state of mind and of your current mood or energy level. Unlike what we may think at first, awareness is actually simple to develop and to use every single day in our business and personal lives, while we work, commute, sit, walk or stand up. And REAL LIFE YOGA gives you exactly the right methods for that, wherever you are, online or directly at your desk and only in a few minutes.

Awareness is simple to develop and to use every single day in our business and personal lives.

Awareness, your new favourite business perk.

By being aware and acting directly on how our body feels and how our breath flows, not only are we helping our body release physical tensions and our nervous system respond accordingly to what we need, but we can boost our psychological and emotional well-being. As we become more aware in our corporate environment, we can start to actively take care of our self while we work and this makes us feel empowered and more positive about ourselves. From a state of being stressed and overworked, we can choose and make the change to a state in which we feel safe, conscious and in control of our well-being and this brings us to a major shift in the way we work and live our business life.

How to start bringing more awareness, step by step into your busy life?

Simply taking a minute every now and then to tune in, observing your breath and listening to your body. It is simple, takes only a minute and does not require you to go anywhere or to change clothes, so you may just as well try it right away, really. For more information about how being aware can empower your life, read on this article: The power of awareness & how to start using it today.

Stress management & productivity at your desk: on moving (part 2).

Following on our previous article and our interview at CNNMoney Switzerland, we will guide you through your body today with a simple and quick way to release tension effectively, directly at your desk and without changing clothes. Because all you need to start living a more sustainable and empowered business life is to breathe and to move consciously, with calm and awareness. And as you will see, taking a moment to be mindful and aware of your body while you work can have a major and direct impact on your wellbeing and productivity.

Move to release tensions and prevent them from building up.

We can feel our body and we are the only who can do this for ourselves. This is why it is our own responsibility and no one else’s, to check regularly on how we are feeling physically through the day. Sure, it is easy to get lost up there in our thoughts and to operate all day long from our all mighty mind. But as long as we stay there, we are not making any connection to what our body is telling us and so we miss out on very valuable information. Though, once we start taking our body into consideration as well, we find that we can start to understand and use the signals it sends us to operate at a much higher and sustainable level.

Once we start taking our body into consideration as well, we find that we can start to understand and use the signals it sends us.

Is your head tense and you cannot think straight? Then, look for tensions at the base.

Do you know that feeling when your head feels constricted, compressed, everything in your mind is blurry, confused and your thinking capacity seems to be momentarily unaccessible? Then close your eyes for a minute, breathe naturally and notice if you can feel any tension in your neck, at the base of your head. Softly tilt your head up and down, breathing in as you look up, breathing out as you bring your chin to the chest. Repeat 5 times. Then move your head from side to side, looking over your shoulders. Inhale as you turn to one side, exhale as you bring your head back to centre. Repeat 5 times again, breathing slowly and focusing the sensations in your neck. To loosen up tensions even further, reach for the base of your head on both sides of your neck with your fingertips and give yourself a little massage. Apply a gentle pressure with your fingers as you walk them on the area, make small circles and see if you can feel any tense spots of knots there. Keep breathing and massaging this place mindfully for a few more seconds.

Neck moves are a great and effective way to release tensions in the neck, thereby preventing headaches.
