The art of resilience. Why you need more of it in your business life.

Last week, I attended the Startup Grind event held in Zurich and just like in the last editions, we got the audience relaxed and ready for the fireside chat with a REAL LIFE YOGA session. What keeps me coming back to each event is this wonderful capacity for resilience and optimism I can feel and recognise in each and every guest who has been interviewed. Resilience is a quality worth sharing and experiencing, whether you are in the entrepreneurial or corporate world. So if you haven’t already, make sure you join us for the next Startup Grind to experience what resilience is all about.

Resilience helps you to sustain a doer's mindset.

I am consciously not naming it “entrepreneurial” mindset, because this capacity to take action, over an over again without doubting that everything you undertake is worth trying, is a trait that should be fostered in the corporate world. Whatever ecosystem you work in, you’ll achieve much more if you let yourself the chance to try and learn at ever single step.

It reminds you of how serious or not you ought to take things.

You do not have to be a zen master, nor an advance meditation practitioner or yogi to detach yourself from the outcome of projects and business ideas. Just remind yourself that each task in your daily business life is worth being conducted with care and attention. Give it a chance and the best you can. This is realistically speaking all you can do and influence, the rest is out of your reach, so why blaming or stressing yourself and others?

Remind yourself that each task in your daily business life is worth being conducted with care and attention.

It helps you take responsibility.

Knowing what is your role and scope of action, what are the elements you can act upon and what you can make out of them - all of this falls into your responsibility. Knowing this, you can take full ownership of your decisions. Something didn’t work out although you gave your best? Well, you have learnt and can do better next time, or try it a bit differently. End of the story. Resilience is powerful tool for a sustainable business life and will keep you in the right place. One of a responsible and creative doer, enthusiastic learner and resourceful human being.

Stress management & productivity at your desk: on awareness (part 3).

All we need to start living a more sustainable and empowered business life is to breathe and to move consciously, and this can only happen if you are aware of it. To wrap up our series of articles following our interview on CNNMoney Switzerland last week, we will show you how and why awareness is the base of everything, from wellbeing to productivity including stress management.

It all starts with awareness.

Whether you are using your breath or learning to move consciously at your desk, everything starts with awareness. This means being aware of your body, of your state of mind and of your current mood or energy level. Unlike what we may think at first, awareness is actually simple to develop and to use every single day in our business and personal lives, while we work, commute, sit, walk or stand up. And REAL LIFE YOGA gives you exactly the right methods for that, wherever you are, online or directly at your desk and only in a few minutes.

Awareness is simple to develop and to use every single day in our business and personal lives.

Awareness, your new favourite business perk.

By being aware and acting directly on how our body feels and how our breath flows, not only are we helping our body release physical tensions and our nervous system respond accordingly to what we need, but we can boost our psychological and emotional well-being. As we become more aware in our corporate environment, we can start to actively take care of our self while we work and this makes us feel empowered and more positive about ourselves. From a state of being stressed and overworked, we can choose and make the change to a state in which we feel safe, conscious and in control of our well-being and this brings us to a major shift in the way we work and live our business life.

How to start bringing more awareness, step by step into your busy life?

Simply taking a minute every now and then to tune in, observing your breath and listening to your body. It is simple, takes only a minute and does not require you to go anywhere or to change clothes, so you may just as well try it right away, really. For more information about how being aware can empower your life, read on this article: The power of awareness & how to start using it today.

How to keep your mind clear and ready for the best

As I sat down to write this morning, I looked at my desktop that beautifully says “breathe”. And this made we wonder: when was the last time I actually looked at it and breathed deeply as I read this? When was the last time I noticed this word, this powerful reminder behind my folders, behind everything I am busy working on? This desktop is what happens in our minds. And this is how you can keep it clear.

Our mind tends to get cluttered with ideas, thoughts, to-dos and worry, all the time. Be it in our business or personal life, we soon let all its space for self-judgment and our inner-critic to flourish. Soon there is very little room left for positive thinking, motivation, inspiring and aspiring thoughts or action items. And every life coach will tell you how decisively important positive affirmation are. How crucial it is to sustain awareness and mindfulness towards the inner dialog that happens within ourselves. How we can actually stir our conscious and unconscious minds towards a better direction with positive visualization, with gratitude and with affirmations about what we aspire to live.

A clearer and more positive mindset is also something you can reach using easy yoga methods. If you have time, escaping on a yoga retreat is of course a wonderful thing to do to help your mind and body relax and reset. But here are a few very accessible yoga techniques to help you clear your mind and reset your unconscious anytime you feel the need, anytime your mental workplace is overloaded.

Breathing

Among all the breathing techniques or pranayama used in yoga, the skull-shining breath, also called “kapalbhati” is wonderful to gain clarity when you need to release your mind from the fog of thoughts and worries.

Setting positive intentions

Also called sankalpa, these intentions or positive affirmations are mostly used in yoga nidra practice to help you reset your unconscious. In yoga nidra or “yogic sleep”, your brain oscillates between states of wakefulness and deep sleep, which allows you to build a bridge between your conscious and unconscious. This is where you can set a conscious intention which will be planted as a seed and will be able to grow in your unconscious for positive and durable change. Simply imagine that you can install a new, more positive and beneficial “software” from which you will start operating instead of letting old softwares and limiting self-beliefs rule your life.

Visualization

Working together to emphasise the impact of intentions, visualization is a powerful tool that you may also use on its own, seeing yourself in situations you are expecting to experience soon. Imagine you are about to give an important presentation and you can already feel the anxiety rising up. Close your eyes and see yourself at the moment you step in front of the audience to give your presentation. Feel each of your steps, firm and grounded in the floor, the way you walk, tall and confident. Hear yourself speak, clearly and with conviction, see the faces in the audience, attentive and open to what you have to say. Feel yourself, calm, present and in control.

It’s ok if you cannot meditate. Breathing is enough.

From all the methods I use in my coaching, be it online or in the REAL LIFE YOGA classes and corporate workshops I teach in Zurich, there is one that amazes me each time I guide my clients through it. And actually it is the simplest technique you could ever think of when it comes to relaxation, yoga and mindfulness.

So here is one wonderful tip for all those who think they cannot meditate, for all those who are stressed and who wish to bring more awareness into their personal or business life, at their desk, in public transport or in the coffee break. You can do this anytime, wherever you are, whatever clothes you wear. Tune in and breathe naturally, this will change your life.

What tuning in and breathing naturally allows us to do is to become more aware of ourselves on a regular basis, training our awareness muscle.

Tune in, step by step

Sit comfortably in a straight position, long back, head tall and shoulders relaxed.

Now close your eyes and breathe naturally. Let the air come in and out of your nostrils, through the throat and down to your abdomen. Do not try to change its natural flow or intensity, just let your breath come and go.

Observe your natural breath

For yourself, just observe how it feels to breathe right here, right now. How does it feel to breathe in my body? Is it deep or subtle? Can I feel my chest or my belly moving together with each inhale and exhale? Can I hear the sound of my own breath? Can I feel the temperature of the air flowing inside my nostrils, slightly cooler on the inhale and warmer on the exhale? Stay there, breathing naturally for 5 more rounds, without attempting to change anything, simply observing and breathing.

Feel your body

As you sit here, breathing naturally, you might start to feel a part of your body that feels a bit tense or which requires more attention from you right now. Let it speak, listen what it tells you, feel it. Now imagine you can breathe anywhere inside your body, not only in your lungs. Imagine your body is completely hollow and that you can consciously breathe into this part of your body which feels tense or uncomfortable. Breathe into that space, go there with all your awareness, breathe out to release a little bit of the tension stored there. Inhale: go into that space inside your body. Exhale deeply: release any stress and tension, just let it go, help it go out of your system with the exhale. Repeat 5 more times. Then slowly open your eyes when you are ready.

Make it your own little yoga challenge, once or twice a day.

What tuning in and breathing naturally allows us to do is to become more aware of ourselves on a regular basis, training our awareness muscle. From there, we can feel more empowered and centered to take action and make better choices in life. Knowing that there is a technique as simple as this to focus on yourself, to come out of your mind, to connect with your body and to feel it. It seems like nothing but it has a great impact. You realise that your breath can help you calm down, it can help you focus anytime you decide. Just by consciously breathing into one place of your body, you can help your body release tensions. How powerful is that?

So make sure you take a moment every now and then, throughout your hectic day at work to tune in and breathe naturally. Make it your own little yoga challenge, once or twice a day. If you don’t have a minute for yourself, simple solution: make it. You can easily trade this minute to tune in with your Self and with your body, let’s say instead of staring at your phone or scrolling down your LinkedIn feed.

Your employees need a shift and this will not happen in a boot-camp.

The stress and pressure we experience in the workplace are our own to deal with. It is a bold statement but this is what I experienced as former advertising manager and what I keep seeing now in companies in Switzerland as I coach employees to be more successful and sustainable in their business life. So instead of treating and even aggravating the symptoms with corporate well-being perks, let’s use another approach, acting directly on the cause by simply using resources we already have within ourselves. Let me explain what it is and how this is possible.

Today between all the deadlines, projects and meetings, the luckiest employees can also choose from a wide array of activities to boost their well-being and performance: boot-camp to release tension, mindfulness workshops to handle pressure or corporate yoga classes to reduce stress and help them center. This is great, but – yes, there is a but! By doing so you ask them to be at their best in their job while having to find an extra hour time in their already busy enough schedule to attend this activity.

Now, for the few employees who are at the edge – in the finish line before a deadline and already thinking that they are failing at managing everything at the same time, meaning they should actually be even more efficient – you can imagine that they will not take that extra time although they need it the most. At best you give them another reason here to feel bad about themselves for being so unable to manage their time, their health, their stress, their projects and their self-worth, all at the same time. Well done, you gave them a ticket for self-inflicted burnout.

You give your employees another reason here to feel bad about themselves for being so unable to manage their time, their health, their stress, their projects and their self-worth, all at the same time.

The shift comes from within.

This is where a shift in needed. Instead of adding on perks and extra activities to help employees focus and save time on what is important, we have been creating more ways to scatter attention, more ways to feel unable to manage everything at the same, creating thereby more stress and more tension. The shift in the way we work, in the way employees relate to stress and in the way companies function can only happen once we understand that we already have all the resources we need within ourselves to be more resilient, balanced and productive, whatever challenges we are facing. We do need to stop looking out for activities when the solution is inside. This applies to executive and leadership coaching as well, work on your Self first to work with others. And this does not mean learning models or matrixes by heart. True, sustainable and impactful changes only come from within. Take the time to become aware and conscious of yourself first, of your body and your state of mind while you work. Only then can you create this major shift in the way you work which will allow you to operate at a much higher level, no matter what the circumstances.

The shift in the way employees relate to stress and in the way companies function can only happen once we understand that we already have all the resources we need within ourselves,

And here is the magic, all you need for this is to breathe and move with purpose. This is all you need in order to feel better, more aware and empowered in your job and in your daily life. Of course, we already do this all the time but we have become so unaware of our body and mind while in are in the office - and outside of the office for that matter - that we do not know nor understand how to use it to our advantage. How do I breathe to release tension? What move should I do to release pain in my back? What can I do to focus or feel energised when I need to find a solution, right here, right now? And who thought that yogis were so wise to give us the best executive, leadership, business and self-empowerment tools, simply by using our breath and body? This is why I created REAL LIFE YOGA a coaching methods based on yoga exercises that are so simple that they can be used anytime, anywhere, in normal business clothes, at your desk or in the coffee break. No need to be a yogi nor to be flexible.

All you need for this is to breathe and move with purpose.

If you are a company and want to coach your employees using these methods, either in groups or in individual sessions, get in touch and ask for a free 30 min discovery call. We will take it from there.
