Two methods every entrepreneur and investor should know.

I was glad to attend the Startup DAYs in Bern this week and to exchange so many views, inputs and inspirations with investors, corporate representatives and entrepreneurs from Switzerland and abroad. As a yoga coach of course, I brought useful and accessible methods so that the 829 participants could make the most of the two days. If you missed the event and did not get a chance to try them out, here is a refresher on how to be at your best for your pitch and how to think clearly before you decide to invest.

The tip to nail your pitch: standing balance.

1. Stand up straight, step one foot in front of the other.

2. Distribute your body weight equally on both feet.

3. Balance here for a few seconds. Remember to breathe deeply.

4. To spice things up, close your eyes and keep the balance.

5. Repeat on the other side, bringing the back foot to the front this time.

Why it works.

In order to balance, your mind has to be completely still and focussed. As soon as distracting thoughts come, you loose the balance. So play with this method and trick your system whenever you need to focus: stand up, balance and get all the focus you need instantly.

When to use it.

Before you go on stage to pitch your business idea to investors. Use this simple method to empty your head, focus and give your best pitch ever!

The tip to invest smart: skull shining breath.

1. Sit or stand straight, putting the right hand on your abdomen.

2. Exhale forcefully through the nose and pull the belly in at the same time.

3. Focus on the exhale only, the inhale happens passively.

4. Keep exhaling strongly at a constant rhythm (once or twice per second).

5. Repeat at least 20 times and breathe again naturally as you stop.

Why it works

This breathing technique brings you all the oxygen you need to think clearly. It also helps you calm the mind chatter and tune in with your “gut feeling”. You are now ready and alert to take the right decision with confidence and conviction

When to use it

Before you vote when you are in the jury for a competition or if you are thinking about investing in a new startup. Use this simple breathing method to clear your mind anytime you are about to take action or an important decision.

It is all in the mindset! And this applies to being an entrepreneur.

As I launched REAL LIFE YOGA almost a year ago, I did not realise that this made me an entrepreneur. What does it actually mean to be an entrepreneur and how do you make that big step in the unknown? There is one great reality about the startup scene that I would like to share: it is a vibrant, inspiring and amazingly humbling ecosystem. From exchanging with a great amount of fellow startup owners and advising others who are just finding their way into entrepreneurship, I gathered following tips that will help you in your journey.

Put yourself out, today!

Your website, logo and business cards do not have to be perfect for you to start talking about your business so do not hide behind them. Believe me, they will change so the longer you take them as an excuse to stay shy, the more time and inputs you will miss on. And even though thanks to my background in advertising I had a fair idea on how to brand myself, I still made a complete rebranding after 6 months and changed my website already 3 times within the first year. So why stress and worry about your logo? Do not wait, things change and your brand will as well.

Although I come from advertising, I made a complete rebranding after 6 months and changed my website already 3 times within the first year.

Be ready to network.

A big part of being your own boss and your own brand is that events become a crucial part of your new business life. Attend events about entrepreneurship and any topic related to what you offer or to what you could use and learn for your activity. Get your self-confidence on and speak to people. If you exchange with other startup owners, great! You can learn from their experience, grow your network and build up cooperation or bartering opportunities. And if you end up booking yourself up every evening of the week, you will most probably know that you have had enough inputs for now.

Pitch pitch and pitch.

Talk to potential clients and to other entrepreneurs. Pitching allows you to refine your service, to gain clarity on the problem you are aiming to solve with your business and to iterate on the solution you are providing. But even further than that, ask for feedback, see how people react, notice how you feel when you talk about your service and become very conscious of what you say and how you say it. Beyond the strategic adjustment, pitching is a wonderful self-growth exercise because you will be face darker parts of your self and limiting beliefs that are holding you back. So use your pitch as a wonderful chance to work on your business as a business owner and on your Self as an individual.

Take action and if you don’t know how, then find out.

What helped me the most to act as an entrepreneur and to understand what it takes, was to take part in competitions and listen to talks from entrepreneurs such as in Startup Weekends, Startup Days or Startup Grind events. They are the best mental training I could think of and in the end, you are your own business coach, so you better spend time with people and in environments that take you to the top of your capacities. These will lift you up with positive energy and driven people, will allow you to shift your mindset and learn key methods to live differently your business: go out, pitch, validate, exit perfection, try, fail and learn. Over and over again. Of course, do not forget breathing in between.

What we forget when investing in a startup… And no, it’s not about money.

When you start your own business, you set up a budget and look for best strategies to finance your project. Do I inject my own capital, apply for a microcredit or pitch to investors? Even though financial capital is an important factor in the start of your own company, most of us overlook the health capital that we are going to invest no matter what. So let me show you why it is so crucial.

One third of the new businesses who fail in the first 3 years, do because of health issues (source: Bundesamt für Statistik). This is the input that caught my attention las evening at an event on microcredit for small business owner organized by Unternehmehrinen Events in Zurich. Think about it, every third entrepreneur will fail because its health decides otherwise. Not because their financial planning was bad or because they made poor strategic decisions - those are other reasons why entrepreneurs give up, yet the rates here are not even higher than the health-related ones.

So what does this tell us and what can we do about it? From my perspective, being an entrepreneur myself and coaching business professionals to be at their best in their day-to-day job without compromising their health, it comes down to two factors:

We are unaware of our body.

For most of us, our mind takes the lead when we work and the body is given attention only again after work when we go to the gym, on the weekend or on holidays. So unless our body hurts or starts functioning properly we do not listen to it.

As entrepreneurs, we become our own boss.

This means we set our working hours, our pace and expectations. And most of the time, self-criticism and self-judgment will be just around the corner to make us work even harder, longer and deprive our body and mind for time-off, breaks and self-care.

The bottom-line is simple: be mindful and aware of your body. Take regular breaks to move from your chair, take a deep relaxing breath into your belly a few times during the day. Use your mind to pair up with your body in this intense and exciting adventure of entrepreneurship, because this is how you will make the most out of it. When your body is being listened to and given what it needs – movement, enough oxygen, rest, care and stretches to release tension – then it helps your mind be clearer. Then only it allows you to operate at a much higher and more sustainable level.
